Women’s tennis welcomes four newcomers for 2022-23
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy Women’s Tennis Head Coach Keith Puryear announced its full class of 2026, as four freshmen will join the contenders for the upcoming 2022-23 season.
Ranked 24th entering class among mid-major programs according to the TennisRecruiting.net website, each newcomer was ranked among the top 200 prospects for the 2022 recruiting cycle, as Sia Chaudry, Ellie Choat, Christina Danford and Hanna Elks Smith are set to compete this year alongside the nine returning Mids.
“We welcome all four to the Navy women’s tennis fold,” Puryear said. “They have all worked hard to get here and we see a bright future in store for each of them.”
The Navy enters the 2022-23 season after a 22-6 campaign in 2021-22, recording a 4-1 mark in the Patriot League and reaching the league semifinals. The Mids open the fall roster Sept. 9 with the Bill & Sandra Moore Invitational.
Sia Chaudry | 5-3 | Midlothian, Virginia | clover hill
Attended Clover Hill High School, playing on the tennis team for two seasons in the #1 singles and #1 doubles spots…Regional singles runner-up as a junior…Won regional singles championship as a senior, continuing to be a state runner-up…Rated five-star rookie by TennisRecruiting.net, ranked #1 rookie in Virginia for the Class of 2022…Top 50 in the nation for USTA under-18 rankings years and under… Member of the National Honor Society of Clover Hill, Mu Alpha Theta, Senior Council, Spanish Club and National Art Honor Society… Daughter of Ramesh and Gaun Chaudry.
Puryear sur Chaudry: “She had a very decorated junior career, as she was always one of the best players in the Mid-Atlantic section. With continued hard work, we believe she has the tools to be a great collegiate competitor.”
Ellie Choat | 5-2 | Edwardsville, Ill. | St. Joseph’s Academy (Mo.)
Attended St. Joseph’s Academy in St. Louis, Mo., playing on the tennis team for four years… Was part of the No. 1 doubles duo for all four years, while rotating between singles spots No. 1 and No. 2… Helped St. Joseph’s win the State Tag Team Championship as a sophomore and senior, with the team placing third in the United States in its freshman year… Was part of the two-time champion of State as a freshman, sophomore, and junior…Finished as a state runner-up in doubles during his senior season…Won first-team All-Metro in each of his four years at St. Joseph’s …Served as a team captain for his senior year…Ranked a four-star recruit by TennisRecruiting.net…Member of his high school’s National Honor Society, National History Honor Society, National English Honor Society and National Chinese Honor Society…Daughter of Jeff and Eileen Choate.

Christian Danford | 5-9 | Hattiesburg, Miss | Sacred Heart
Attended Sacred Heart Catholic High School, playing five seasons for the tennis team… Played No. 1 in singles and doubles… Helped Sacred Heart win three state tag team championships… Two-time champion State singles 1A…Selected to Mississippi’s junior team for the Southern Cup nine times…Crowned USTA Mississippi Closed Championship 16 & 18 champion…Ranked Mississippi’s top player in all age categories…Ranked among Top 25 players in the nation by USTA… Rated a four-star recruit by TennisRecruiting .net… Also ran cross country and track for Sacred Heart… Named all-state for cross country and track, winning the 1600m outdoor state championship…High school valedictorian…Mu Alpha Theta member of Sacred Heart, National Honor Society and STEM Team…National Merit Finalist…Presidential Scholarship Program nominee … 2022 Mississippi Distinguished Young Woman Winner…Daughter of Joseph and Beth Danford…Father served in Air Force…Br others attended United States Military Academy at West Point.

Attended Pine Crest School, playing tennis for two seasons…Helped Pine Crest win district and conference tag team championships as a junior…Captured individual district championship as a sophomore and junior…Served as team captain for two years… Teammate of a Harvard tennis student-athlete Demi Snyder and professional player Akasha Urhobo… Rated a three-star recruit by TennisRecruiting.net… Also competed for the swim and dive teams Pine Crest Athletics…Was an American swimmer, helping Pine Crest win state team championships as a sophomore and junior while also being part of combined relay teams of four state champions…Won a individual district championship on the track…Named Broward Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the Miami Herald as a senior…Member of Pine Crest’s English Honors Society, Spanish Honors Society and Math Ho nors Society…Daughter of Charles “Bubba” and Constance “Connie” Smith…Her father played four seasons of football at Duke University.
