Women’s swimming and diving: Panthers use team effort to win Section 8A True Team title
All of the Panthers’ swimmers and divers did what it took to win the school’s first Section 8A True Team title since 2012.
Addison Lauwagie and Emma Vrieze recorded winning times, but it was depth that saw the Panthers dominate the eight-team field at Detroit Lakes on Saturday, October 16.
âI liked our chances. I knew we had more depth than before, âsaid Park Rapids head coach Todd Fritze. âEveryone scores, so our youngest had to run. The girls continued until the end. They found a way to win.
In the True Team format, each swimmer and diver scores points, the winner of the individual events receives 32 points while the last wins 1 point. Point totals are doubled in relays.
The Panthers opened the competition by scoring 73 points in diving, led by Allie Rowland’s 284.25 points for seventh place and Laney Vrieze’s 279.40 points for eighth place.
Lauwagie, Massie Lee, Mylee Edevold and Whitney Seifert started the swimming events placing third in the 200-yard medley relay in 2: 04.07 while Maria Wagner, Gabi Shepersky, Claire Voigt and Nora Cederstrom finished sixth in 2: 13.70 to help Park Rapids score 184 points in this event.
Runner-up Emma Vrieze 2: 10.86, Lizzie Seifert’s 2: 12.14 for fourth place and Maya Deshayes’ 2: 14.54 for fifth place helped provide 101 points in the 200 freestyle before the Panthers failed. score 94 points in the 200 IM with Lee clocking 2: 30.94 for third place and Amelia Bagstad sixth in 2: 37.33.
Lauwagie won the 50 freestyle in 26.44 and Edevold was 10th in 27.98 as the Panthers scored 94.50 points in that race while Voigt 1: 10.84 and Edevold’s 1: 11.97 gave a 4-7 showing the 100 butterfly as Park Rapids added 85 points to his team score.
In the 100 freestyle, Lauwagie was third in 59.29, Lizzie Seifert was fourth in 59.33 and Bagstad was seventh in 1: 03.30 to give Park Rapids 101 points. After Emma Vrieze’s winning time of 5: 58.25 in the 500 freestyle, Deshayes (third in 6: 01.03), McKenzie Himango (sixth in 6: 28.11) and Cederstrom (eighth in 6:35:85 ) while the Panthers amassed 114 points for their team total.
Lauwagie, Edevold, Deshayes and Emma Vrieze finished third in 1: 49.71 while Lizzie Seifert, Voigt, Himango and Bagstad finished sixth in 1: 55.51 in the 200 freestyle relay for 176 points ahead of Voigt (fourth in 1: 11.81) and Wagner (eighth in 1: 14.70) helped Park Rapids add 83 points in the 100 backstroke.
The Panthers scored 97 points in the 100 breaststroke with Lee (5th in 1: 18.10), Cederstrom (9th in 1: 22.59) and Shepersky (10th in 1: 23.76) in the lead. Park Rapids scored their last 188 points in the 400 freestyle relay as Emma Vrieze, Deshayes, Lee and Lizzie Seifert were second in 4: 01.00 while Bagstad, Whitney Seifert, Avery Schueller and Cederstrom were sixth in 4: 26.31.
The state’s true Class A team reunion will be held Thursday (October 21) starting at 7 p.m. at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. Mankato West (section 1), Breck (section 2), Orono (section 3), Visitation (section 4), Monticello (section 5), Alexandria (section 6) and Grand Rapids (section 7) are the other section champions who have qualified. while Delano, Mahtomedi, Hutchinson and Waconia secured wild card spots to complete the 12-team state meet.
âIt will be a good experience for them,â said Fritze. âThe girls are excited. Qualifying for the state is something they should get excited about. They worked extremely hard and they deserved it.
