MONROE – The Weston girls dominated the pool in the Southwestern Conference. Winners of six straight league titles before the league meeting at Masuk High, the Trojans maintained their position on Saturday.

Weston scored 530.5 points to fend off challenges from Pomperaug with 545 and Newtown with 423.

“Over the years, our teams have built up with top talent,” said coach Brandon Barone. “This season it’s our depth, our ability to score 2-8 points that got us out of it.”

Brianna Deierlein of Newtown was named SWC’s Outstanding Swimmer. In the second year, Deierlein won the 100 freestyle in 51.97.

Weston won the 200 medley relay to open the competition. Newtown was second and Pomperaug third in the event.

Pomperaug finished 94-89 with four point winners in the 200 freestyle, including champion Margaret Rutledge, after two events.

Weston, with Ally Bradley and Zofia Chmiel placed two-three, took the lead in the 200 IM. It was Weston 186, Pomperaug 152 and the hunt was on.

“I loved the way Katie Franco and Ally Bradley led us today,” Barone said of his senior tandem. “Katie won the 50 freestyle and was second in the 100. Allie was second in the 100 breaststroke and 200 IM. And of course, they were there for us at the end.

Barone was referring to the last event of the competition, the 400m freestyle relay. Weston had secured the victory before the swim. This did not prevent the quartet of Adele Kopis, Olivia Huewe, Bradley and Franco from closing the championship with a winning time of 3: 36.78. The SCC competition record is 2: 36.51 set by Weston in 2015.

“The girls are exactly where or near us, we want them to come into the States,” Barone said.

Pomperaug, the 2014 champion and four-time runner-up, and three times runner-up, Newtown, challenged Weston in his race. Newtown was a league finalist in 2020.

Olivia Hebert of Immaculée / Bethel was first in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke.

The other individual winners were Margaret Rutledge of Pomperaug (200 freestyle), Ava Gravgaard of Brookfield (diving), Audrey Gil of Barlow (100 butterfly) and Cate Carboni of Immaculate / Bethel (500 freestyle).
