Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of the SwimSwam College Recruitment Channel and all engagement news. For many, swimming in college is a long-held dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who have supported them on their journey.

Kira Brownell from Cheyenne, Wyoming, has announced her commitment to swim and study at New Mexico State University starting in the 2022-2023 school year.

“I am delighted to announce that I will be continuing my college and swimming career at New Mexico State University. I want to thank my family as well as my club and high school coaches for believing in me and helping make college swimming possible. I can’t wait to be Aggie! #AggieUp “

Brownell swims for Capital City Aquatics in Cheyenne, WY. During the summer, she had many best times in the long course at the senior championships in the western zone. These best times included the 50 (27.63), 100 (1: 01.68) and 200 (2: 13.23) freestyle, 100 (1: 08.12) and 200 (2: 32.90) backstroke , 100 butterfly (1: 14.52) and 200 MI (2: 32.70).

She continued her success this fall as she had a very successful high school season at Central High School. At the Wyoming 4A Women’s High School Championships (Grandes Ecoles), she had the best times in the 50 freestyle (23.67) and 100 backstroke (56.00). These times have captured both state titles. His 50 free time also earned him his first Futures Cup.

His best short course yardage times are:

  • 50 free: 23.67
  • 100 free: 52.30
  • 200 freestyle: 1: 56.18 (1: 54.98 alt. Adjusted)
  • 100 back: 56.00
  • 200 back: 2: 10.04
  • 200 IM: 2: 09.59

New Mexico State University is a public university located in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The school is a member of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) in Division I of the NCAA. The New Mexico State women finished second out of eight teams at the 2021 WAC Championships. They were just nine points behind conference champions northern Arizona.

Based on his best times, Brownell has the potential to make an immediate impact for the team at the conference level. Her best times would have placed her in the “A” final of the 50 freestyle and the 100 backstroke and the “B” final of the 100 and 200 freestyle.

Brownell will arrive on campus next fall as a member of the 2026 class with the sprint freestyler Katie Ice Rink and freestyler remotely Naomi slee. She arrives just in time as the team gets their fastest bib diploma, Maude Boily-Dufour, although she has the potential to take a fifth year due to the COVID-19 eligibility waiver.
