Mike Doyle will coach the girls of Cathedral Prep

to play

Mike Doyle’s presence in Cathedral Prep water sports is about to deepen.

Doyle, a 2000 graduate, competed in water polo and swimming during his years as a Rambler and has coached his alma mater programs since 2008.

Now, due to the closure of Villa Maria Academy, Doyle will add Prep’s freshman women’s water polo program to his coaching resume. He succeeds Bob Fischer, who retired after 21 seasons at the helm of the Victors.

End of an era: The last class of Villa Maria Academy closes the door on the school’s history

The Catholic Diocese of Erie closed Villa at the end of the 2021-22 academic year. His returning female students will attend Prep, which will be a coeducational school for the first time in its 101-year history.

After: Renovations at Cathedral Prep are still underway and should be complete by September

Here are some of the notable players who will be suitable for the preparation, as well as those of the McDowell boys and girls and the Fairview girls:

Mitchell Bradford, senior, cathedral prep: Last season’s Erie Times-News District 10 Male Swimmer of the Year returns for his final season for the Ramblers, who placed eighth at the 2021 state tournament.

Aidan Levis, Senior, Cathedral Prep: His performance as a junior earned him third-team all-state honors. Doyle named him one of three captains this season.

Callum Snider-Mills, sophomore, cathedral prep: He was voted state freshman during the Ramblers’ participation in the 2021 tournament.

Evan Teeter, senior, McDowell: He will have a new coach for his last season. Mike Esper will also lead the Trojans women’s water polo program.

Megan Cardella, sophomore, Cathedral Prep: The driver was chosen for the all-state freshman team in his only season at Villa.

Emily Consiglio, Senior, Cathedral Prep: The three-time Ramblers captain was named a Western Conference first-team player as a junior.

Claire Gebhardt, junior, McDowell: She scored five goals as the Trojans beat Villa 9-8 in overtime of the Western Conference Finals and advanced to the state tournament.

Emerald Rucks, Senior, Fairview: His name featured regularly in the Tigers box scores in 2021 for goals and assists.

Katie Welton, Senior, Cathedral Prep: Like Consiglio, the driver was an all-conference first-team selection.
