Men’s swimming and diving to compete in SMU Classic – Texas A&M Athletics


DALLAS – The Texas A&M Men’s Swim and Dive Team launches the 2021-22 campaign at the SMU Classic for a two-day, six-team event starting Friday at 6:30 p.m. inside the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center and Barr-McMillion Natatorium.

Competition continues Saturday at 11 a.m. The Aggies are joined alongside Louisville, Arizona, Missouri, Michigan and SMU.

The SMU Classic consists of eight swimmers and one diver from each competing institution. The events will be contested in two series, with one swimmer from each school in each series. Divers will compete over 1 and 3 meters.

The Aggies return to the pool after their 2020-21 campaign, where they placed in the top 10 all season and tied the top 10 in the program.e finish as a team at the NCAA Championships. The Maroon & White welcomes 36 student-athletes, including six All-Americans: Kaloyan Bratanov, Jace Brown, Clayton bobo, Carter Nelson, Andres Puente and transfer Iowa Anze Irons Erzen. Bratanov leads a senior class of seven Aggies, all captains for the 2021 season. The Katy, Texas native is looking to build on his 2020-21 campaign, where he added points in the A-final of the SEC Championships , finishing sixth in the 100 freestyle (42.98) and 200 freestyle (1: 34.24), and seventh in the 200 IM (1: 44.29). He also helped the 800 free relay, alongside senior returnees Clayton bobo, a first-place finish at the SEC championships and tied for the best result in the relay program as they took third place in the event at the NCAA Championships.

Junior Irons Erzen joins the Maroon & White after an impressive two-year spell in Iowa, where he set multiple school records in the 200 backstroke (1: 41.21), 200 IM (1: 46.16) and 400 IM (3: 45,76) and finished 24e in the 200 backstroke (1: 41.24) at the NCAAs.

Senior Kurtis Mathews will lead the A&M diving unit after defending his 3-meter title and winning silver in the 1-meter at last year’s SEC Championships. Second year Victor Povzner returns after the redshirt last season.

Texas A&M’s only appearance in the SMU Classic came in 2007, where the Aggies placed first with 330 points in a field from SMU, Florida State, USC, Wisconsin and Alabama.
