Lily Hughes, bib competitor for Futures, speaks to LSU
Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of the SwimSwam College Recruitment Channel and all engagement news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who have supported them on their journey.
Lily Hughes, a Scotch Plains Fanwood High School elder in Scotch Plains, New Jersey, has pledged to join the LSU Tigers next fall. Hughes is primarily a backstroke swimmer who does her swim club with the Greater Monmouth YMCA.
Hughes had a breakout meet at the NJ YMCA Swimming Festival in April, posting huge drops in the 100 and 200 backstroke. She topped GMNY’s 400 Medley relay in 54.86, an almost complete drop of two seconds from her previous record of 56.77. His 200 backstroke was even more impressive, losing more than five seconds to reach second place in 1: 59.27. The YMCA Swimming Festival served as the unofficial national YMCA championship, after the original meet was canceled. Instead, YMCA programs across the country competed against local YMCA teams and then compiled the results virtually.
Hughes’ best SCY times include:
- 50 back: 25.78
- 100 back: 54.86
- 200 back: 1: 59.27
- 100 flies: 58.69
With a little more improvement, Hughes plans to make an immediate impact for new Tigers head coach Rick Bishop. At the SEC 2021 Championships, it took 54.14 to qualify for the 100 backstroke C final and 1: 57.28 to qualify for the 200 backstroke C final. Hughes is also set to impact LSU’s medley relays as their 400 medley lead was 54.42 last season as an SEC.
The back was a weak spot last year for LSU, as the Tigers only had one scorer between the 100 and 200 in the SEC. LSU’s backstroke situation got even more serious this fall as their only backstroke scorer SEC, NCAA qualifier Summer Stanfield recently entered the NCAA transfer portal following the abrupt resignation of former associate head coach Steve Mellor.
Hughes will join Lily Jones and Payton Woodring, who are also bibs, in the LSU class of 2026 as first-year head coach Bishop looks to rebuild the Tiger women’s program which finished 10th out of 12 teams at the SEC in Last year. Jones has lifetime records of 56.55 and 2: 01.83 in the 100 and 200 backstroke, while Woodring is more focused on the 200 as she sets the best times of 56.77 in the 100 backstroke and 1: 59 , 01 to 200 back.
