Football plays to a scoreless tie on opening night in South Carolina

COLOMBIA, South Carolina – Florida State No. 1 (0-0-1) played to a scoreless tie after 90 minutes of action against No. 12 South Carolina (0-0-1).

Florida State is undefeated in its final 14 season openers and junior goaltender Cristina Roque remains undefeated in her career with a 27-0-7 record.

Jenna Nighswonger kicked things off for the Noles with two first shots, one in the ninth minute and one in the 10e minute that led to the first of seven corners for FSU. The first half would remain scoreless, and Nighswonger had another good look in the net in the 45e minute just outside the box, but it would go just wide.

Florida State outshot South Carolina 8-3 in the first half with three shots on goal.

The Seminoles would take 10 more shots and three more on goal in the second half, but couldn’t get one in the back of the net. After a Gamecock corner, the Seminoles went into transition in the 59the minute and again Nighswonger fired a shot, one of his eight on the night, and slammed it on the crossbar.

The State of Florida threatened again in the 62n/a minute with a serve in the box from Ran Iwai that caused Onyi Echegini to collide with the South Carolina keeper, resulting in possession for South Carolina.

In the 78e minute, Roque caught the ball over the head of the South Carolina forwards on a serve from the right side, helping to secure the 20e shutout of his career.

Florida State finished the game with an 18-7 advantage on shots and a 6-3 advantage on shots. The Noles possessed the ball for 71% of the match.


The Seminoles will face Georgia on Sunday at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU.
