Converted sprinter Rachel Ballard commits to BYU
Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all Pledge News. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who have supported them along their journey.
Rachel Ballarda junior at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, has verbally committed to Brigham Young University for fall 2023.
“I am beyond thrilled to announce my verbal commitment to pursue my athletic and academic career at Brigham Young University. I would like to thank my coaches, my family and the people who pushed me to be my best. The coaching staff and the team atmosphere are amazing and BYU is a great school and a good academic background for me. #byuswimdive”
Ballard competed at the 2022 CHSAA 5A State Championships, where she placed 7th in the 100 freestyle and as part of the 400 freestyle relay. She currently holds school records in the 200 freestyle and 200 IM, as well as part of the 400 freestyle relay, 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay.
Ballard says she used to be a long distance swimmer, but has converted to sprinting over the past year. Prior to her stint as a sprinter, Ballard swam AAA times in the 1000 (10:40.22) and 1650 (17:55.61), but after switching she clocked an AAAA time in the 100 freestyle (51.17), the highest ranking among all. of his best moments.
Ballard swam her best times in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyles in late 2021 and early 2022, signifying her progress as a sprinter since deciding to focus on that area.
Ballard swims the University of Denver Hilltoppers Club. At the 2022 Speedo Sectionals in Austin, she placed 2nd in the 800 freestyle relay, 4th in the 400 freestyle relay, 7th in the 200 freestyle relay, and 15th in the 200 medley relay.
His best short course yardage times are:
- 50 free: 24.10
- 100 free: 51.17
- 200 free: 1:52.94
- 200 MI: 2:08.44
BYU is currently a member of the MPSF swimming and diving conference, although it will move to the Big 12 conference the year Ballard joins the team — assuming the Big 12 continues to sponsor swimming and diving.
Ballard has the potential to make an immediate impact on BYU’s sprint program. Her best times would have made her the 2nd fastest 100 freestyle on the team in the 2021-22 season. She would also have been 5th fastest on 200 freestyler, 6th fastest on 50 freestyler and 8th fastest on 200 IMer.
Ballard joins Kiara Xanthosa breaststroke and IMer, Victoria Schreibera long distance freestyler, and Kara Martinsona sprinter, for the class of 2023.
