Chapin and AC Flora swimmers win SC State Championships
Chapin’s Simon Thompson and AC Flora’s Darden Tate led the Midlands’ strong performance at the South Carolina State Swimming Championships on Monday.
Thompson won the 50 and 100 freestyle and was part of the Eagles’ 200 freestyle winning relay team at the Class 5A championships. Chapin finished fourth overall with a score of 214. JL Mann won the title with a score of 314.
The other individual regional champions in competition 5A were Rhett Moore of Spring Valley (200 freestyle) and Matthew Swain of River Bluff (100 backstroke). Moore was part of the SV 200 medley relay team who finished third. David James of Lexington was second in the 100 butterfly.
As a team, Spring Valley was sixth, River Bluff seventh and Lexington 11th.
Tate won two individual state titles in the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke and was part of the AC Flora 200 IM relay. The Falcons were fifth with 194 points. Eastside won the title with 603.5 points. Irmo finished 13th and Dreher 14th. Emmanuel Gadsen of Irmo was third in the 100m breaststroke.
In class 3A, St. Joseph’s won the tag team championship. Mi-Caroline (11th) and Gilbert (15th) in top schools in the Midlands Gilbert’s Mattew Ambos finished second in the 100 butterfly and third in the 100 backstroke for the Indians, who fielded a swim team for the first time this year.
The Women’s State Championships were held on Saturday. Wando won the Class 5A Women’s Championship with 412 points. Dutch Fork was fifth, Chapin eighth and Lexington 11th. Dutch Fork was second in the 200 freestyle relay and third in the 200 IM relay.
In class 4A girls, Eastside won with 609 points. AC Flora finished ninth and Dreher 10th. Hannah Montgomery of ACF was second in the 100 breaststroke and Jane Koch of Dreher third in the 50 freestyle.
In class 3A, Oceanside Collegiate won the championship. Newberry was the best home team in 11th place.
