Bear swimming in the state with high hopes | Sports

A star-studded Moscow boys team along with qualifiers for the Bear Girls and Lewiston headed south for the Idaho state swimming competitions, Class 4A and 5A, respectively, which took held today and Saturday at the Boise City Aquatic Center / West YMCA.

It is the first state-level swimming competition held in two years, with last season being canceled in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Bear boys are on a run for pristine domination, having won the district tag team title last week behind the top spots in each of the three relays contested as well as five individual events. Moscow has won its district on the boys’ side in all four seasons since swimming became a sanctioned sport in Idaho, and has gone undefeated in regular-season tag team matches every year to boot.

Senior Reid Johnson has the state’s best ranking times of Class 4A in the 100-yard butterfly (53.76 seconds) and 200 freestyle (1: 48.44) events, with margins of over two seconds. His teammate Micah Wohlbrecht is seeded to win the 50 freestyle, and the Bears’ 200 IM relay is also ranked first, putting Moscow in contention for four crown titles if the going goes well.

On the girls’ side, Megan Crossland’s 200 IM seeded time of 2: 30.12 puts her within reach for a medal in fourth place, while Moscow coach Judy Rash noted that Mia Ellis was swimming with a sprained ankle at the district meet last weekend and could surpass her ranking in the 100 butterfly and back.

“If we follow our plan, we will do very, very, very well,” Rash said. “We’re just going to put it that way. My associate trainer (Paige Buehler) is fantastic, and these kids are the best. They’ve got such great attitudes, and they work so hard, and they listen, and they focus, and that’s why we’re where we’re at this weekend.

In Class 5A, Luke Mastroberardino leads Lewiston in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke after automatically qualifying with a second place finish in the district competition events, while several of his teammates received blanket offers.

“I think there would be little chance that Luke wouldn’t make it to the podium,” Lewiston coach Derek Ax said. “It’s Luke’s junior year, so next year things could be even better than they are now. He’s been working really hard for this moment.

Competition 4A will kick off, with a start scheduled for girls at 7:30 am and boys at 10:45 am. Girls 5A invade the pool at 2:30 p.m., and boys 5A at 5:45 p.m. The preliminaries for the event take place today and the finals will be held at the same time on Saturday.
