400-point lists earn two top honors
ROSEMONT, III. – A pair of 400 point lists in a springboard sweep at Notre Dame won Tyler downs two weekly honors as the Olympian was recognized as the Big Ten Diver and Freshman of the Week.
In Friday’s Boilermakers duel at South Bend, Downs won the 1m (401.40) by 75 points and the 3m (431.70) by 59 points. Purdue had at least the top four in both events. Both scores on the list were good for the seventh best in program history.
Downs is the first boilermaker to simultaneously win the Big Ten Diver and Freshman of the Week awards since Joe Cifelli did so twice in the 2015 fall semester. Steele Johnson (October 2014), Jamie Bissett (January 2012) and Layne Rogers (October 2012) have also accomplished the feat for Purdue since Freshman of the Week was added to the Big Ten awards program for swimming and diving in the middle of the 2011-12 season. season.
Downs had the best score in five of six innings at both springboard events. His 1-meter list was underscored by scores of 74 in rounds 2 and 4. In the 3-meter, he scored over 75 points in rounds 3, 5 and 6. He was also victorious in the 3-meter, his Olympic event. this summer, at the Indiana Incollegiates reunite on Oct. 16 during the Purdue season opening weekend.
Greg Duncan and Emily (Bretscher) Pfeiffer were the latest Purdue Diver of the Week winners, taking home the awards on February 5, 2020, on their way to claim the Big Ten 3-meter titles later in the month. As fifth-year student-athletes this season, Duncan and Pfeiffer are both six-time Big Ten Diver of the Week winners.
